Turtles
Lady Elliot Island is a safe haven for Green, Loggerhead and Hawksbill sea turtles, which can be found all year round.
It is also a special place where nesting turtles return home each year from November – March to nest, decades after they hatched here themselves. From January – April, tiny hatchlings begin their incredible journey back to the sea.
With the support of citizen scientists, island staff, and the Leef to Reef Project, we’re learning more about nesting success, foraging behaviour and turtle health on the island.
Whether you’re snorkelling the lagoon or walking the beach, your observations help protect turtles for generations to come.
