Custodianship
Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort
Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort
Since 2005, Lady Elliot Island has been under the custodianship of the Gash family – a turning point in the island’s modern story.
At a time when the island was still recovering from decades of ecological damage, the new leaseholders saw an opportunity: to restore the land, protect its wildlife, and create a world-class eco-tourism experience that gives back to the Great Barrier Reef.
This section shares the story of how a small, remote coral cay became a national example of sustainability, restoration, and responsible tourism – thanks to vision, collaboration, and deep respect for nature.
Explore how the Eco Resort has evolved, the work being done to regenerate the island’s native ecosystems, and how Lady Elliot Island continues to lead the way as a living model of hope for reef conservation.
It’s not about making a fortune, it’s about making a difference.
