Reef Health and Threats
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most vibrant and diverse ecosystems on Earth—but it’s also one of the most vulnerable. Rising ocean temperatures, stronger storms, and marine heatwaves driven by climate change are causing coral bleaching and widespread stress to reef ecosystems. At the same time, outbreaks of coral predators like the Crown-of-Thorns Starfish and Drupella snails add extra pressure, damaging already weakened coral communities.
Here on Lady Elliot Island, we’re actively working to protect the reef. Our team conducts regular reef health surveys, monitors coral condition, and removes coral predators when necessary—giving the reef the best possible chance to stay strong and recover in a changing climate.
By combining science, stewardship and on-ground action, we’re helping to build resilience—so that this remarkable ecosystem can continue to thrive into the future.
