Transformation: What Restoration Looks Like Today
Lady Elliot Island has come a long way – and it’s thanks to a shared commitment to restoring its natural ecosystem.
Today, the revegetation program is guided by the Lady Elliot Island Ecosystem Resilience Plan, developed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. This plan sets the scientific foundation for restoration and divides the island into four revegetation zones, each designed to reflect the native vegetation communities of the Capricorn Bunker cays.
At the heart of this work is a powerful partnership between government, not-for-profit, and private enterprise:
- Funded by the Great Barrier Reef Foundation’s Reef Islands Initiative
- Implemented by Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort
- Guided by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Reef Authority
Together, we’re restoring habitat, improving biodiversity, and building climate resilience.
A keystone of the success of the program is its adaptive management strategy.
