Project Manta

Studying Australia’s Gentle Giants

Established in 2007, Project Manta is a leading research initiative dedicated to understanding manta rays in eastern Australia. This collaborative project brings together scientists, students, and research partners from across the country.

Lady Elliot Island (LEI) is one of the key sites for Project Manta. Researchers visit the island three to four times each year to study manta aggregations, as LEI is a key manta hotspot along the east coast.

How Do They Study Mantas?

Project Manta uses a variety of scientific methods to uncover more about manta ray biology, movement, and behaviour:

  • Photo-identification: Every manta ray has a unique belly pattern, just like a fingerprint.
  • Acoustic telemetry: Tracking manta movements using underwater receivers.
  • Satellite tracking: Monitoring long-distance travel.
  • Oceanography: Studying ocean conditions where mantas gather.
  • Plankton research: Investigating what mantas eat.
  • Genetic and behavioural studies: Learning about manta family trees and how they interact.

Citizen Science in Action

Project Manta relies on divers, snorkellers, and water users like you! Photos and sightings shared by the public help grow the manta database and improve our understanding of these incredible animals.

You can help too – your photos could support real research!

Unravelling the mysteries of manta rays in the quest to save them from the threat of extinction.
