Whale Heritage Area
Celebrating a World-Class Whale Destination
In 2019, Hervey Bay – just north of Lady Elliot Island – was officially designated as the world’s first Whale Heritage Area by the World Cetacean Alliance.
This global recognition celebrates regions where wild whales are respected, protected, and celebrated through:
- Responsible whale watching
- Environmental protection
- Local community involvement
- Education and cultural connection
The sheltered waters of Hervey Bay are a critical stopover for migrating humpback whales. Here, they rest, socialise, and care for their calves – making it one of the best places in the world for close, respectful whale encounters.
Lady Elliot Island lies at the southern gateway to this region, giving guests a front-row seat to the whale migration – and making every sighting a chance to connect with a globally significant marine environment.
