1990s: Business Growth & Long-Term Stewardship

In 1992, Queensland businessman Bevan Whitaker became the full leaseholder of Lady Elliot Island. With a background in aviation and tourism, Bevan had already supported the island’s operations through Sunstate Airlines and Sunstate Travel – managing bookings and helping to connect guests to this remote destination.

Bevan played a key role in shaping Lady Elliot’s modern identity. His business acumen brought stability and steady growth to the island resort. In 1995, as part of his lease renewal, he built the Education Centre – a space for guests to explore island facts from birds to stars, complete with a reef aquarium.

It is our privilege and responsibility to protect Lady Elliot Island and surrounds for future generations.

One of the Longest-Serving Custodians

Bevan managed the lease until 2004, making him one of Lady Elliot’s longest custodians. His focus on guest experience and infrastructure laid the groundwork for the eco-tourism model that would follow.

Dad was involved for over 20 years and he just loved the place to bits.
