Drupella Snails

Hands on Reef Protection

Since 2020, long-term monitoring and site stewardship have identified a persistent Drupella rugosa outbreak in Channel One of our lagoon. Drupella are coral-eating snails that feed on live tissue, often leaving behind white scars and increasing the vulnerability of corals to disease and bleaching.

Through our dedicated Reef Protection Program, we track this outbreak using weekly observations, quarterly surveys, and sightings reported by staff and guests. Our team conducts targeted removals every fortnight, carefully measuring and counting each Drupella. All data is submitted to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and logged in our internal database to track snail density and reef health over time.

Controlling Drupella is a tangible and effective action we can take to reduce local stress on coral communities and help them remain resilient in the face of climate change.
