How the Lighthouse is Protected & Managed

The Lady Elliot Island Lighthouse is over 150 years old and holds national significance as part of Australia’s maritime history. It is protected to preserve its story and structure for generations to come.

Protected by Law
The lighthouse is listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List, giving it legal protection as a place of national heritage value. This ensures that it is cared for in line with strict conservation standards.

Guided by a Heritage Management Plan
The Lady Elliot Island Lighthouse Heritage Management Plan is a federal document that outlines how the lighthouse and associated areas must be maintained, conserved, and used. It carefully balances visitor access with the need to safeguard its unique cultural and historical values.

What Protection Looks Like

  • Regular condition checks and maintenance
  • Use of traditional or similar materials when repairs are needed
  • Controlled visitor access to sensitive areas
  • Interpretive signage and education guided by the plan

Managed in Partnership
Conserving the lighthouse is a team effort. The Heritage Management Plan reflects ongoing collaboration between heritage experts, government agencies, and Traditional Owners.

The lighthouse management involves a partnership between:

  • Australian Government (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority)
  • Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS)
  • Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort
