Flights
Lady Elliot Island is the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with its own airstrip. Because boat access is extremely limited due to shallow reefs and distance from the mainland, aviation has always been a vital part of connecting guests to this special part ofth eworld. From the early day sof Tiger Moths and DHA-Drovers to today’s Cessna Caravans and de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otters, aircraft have made it possible to welcome visitors while minimizing impact on the reef environment.
But we know that air travel contributes to climate change – and coral reefs are among the ecosystems most at risk. That’s why we are taking action.
Flying High - Offsetting Emissions
Since 2017, Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort has partnered with Greenfleet to offset carbon emissions from our flights. Greenfleet plants legally protected forest right here in Australia – including in areas around theSouthern Great Barrier Reef – to restore habitat and capture carbon – a win-win!
Through this partnership, we’re working to ensure that your journey to the island is part of the climate solution, not the problem.
How Your Flight Becomes a Tree
- You Fly to the Island
Your scenic flight burns fuel and creates carbon emissions - We Measure the Emissions
We calculate the carbon footprint of each flight, based on distance, aircraft type and fuel used - We partner with Greenfleet
With the help of guest donations, we fund Greenfleet to plant legally prote4ct4ed native trees that absorb carbon over ther lifetime - Trees are Planted – And Protected!
Seedlings ar eplanted in reforestation sites – helping restore biodiversity and rebuild forests - Trees Absorb CO2 as They Grow
Over time, the forest absorbs the same amount of carbon your flight produced - Your Flight is Carbon Offset
You’ve helped create a climate-positive journey – and supported healthier habitats for wildlife
