Waste Recycling

Recycling

We separate glass, plastic and aluminium from general waste and send them to the mainland where they are recycled into new products, reducing our impact on landfill.

In 2023/2024 Financial Year, we recycled 12,000 aluminium cans! That’s enough to power a TV for over 4 years nonstop – or keep a fridge running for 2 years. The money we earned was donated to Citizens of The Great Barrier Reef.

Producing aluminium products from recycled cans uses 95% less energy than creating it from raw materials, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving natural resources.

Say “No” to Single-Use Plastics

  • We do not sell single-use plastic water bottles
  • Re-fill not landfill – please use our refill stations throughout the resort
  • We avoid plastic bags, cutlery, straws and unnecessary packaging wherever possible
Recycling stations are located throughout the resort so everyone can easily do their part

Why It Matters

  • Plastic poses a deadly threat to marine life:
  • Approximately 90% of all seabirds have ingested plastic
  • Turtles can accidentally eat plastic, causing them to starve
  • Corals have been shown to consume microplastics, weakening their health
  • Manta rays can become entangled in plastic, and if they can’t swim, they can’t breathe
  • Plastics also carry invasive species and harmful pathogens into fragile reef ecosystems
Reducing, re-using, recycling and refusing single-use plastic could save a seabird, protect a turtle and keep our coral reefs healthy

Be a Conscious Consumer

Choose items with minimal or compostable packaging, and say “no” to single-use plastic

Be In The Know:

  • Degradable – breaks down into smaller pieces, however may not fully decompose
  • Biodegradable – breaks down naturally, but not in every environment and can still cause pollution
  • Compostable – breaks down completely into non-toxic and natural materials leaving no toxins behind
