Your Stay
How you can help during your stay
Lady Elliot Island is a sanctuary for marine life, and climate change is one of the greatest threats to the future of this ecosystem. But the good news? Every small action we take to reduce waste and emissions helps protect it.
From thoughtful rubbish separation, to cutting food waste, your choices during your stay – and beyond – can help lower emissions, reduce landfill and keep the reefs protected for future generations of turtles, corals and seabirds.
Small Actions, Big Differences
- Return all food scraps to the restaurant for composting
- Separate our waste use the labelled bins throughout the resort to separate cans, plastics, glass and general waste
- Be thoughtful at the buffet – take only what you’ll eat to avoid food waste (but that doesn’t mean you can’t have seconds, or thirds!)
- Use a reusable water botte and refill at our water stations
- “Take 3 for the Sea” – pick up three pieces of rubbish every time you visit the beach. Marine debriscan be deposited in the bin outside the Education Centre
- Be mindful of resources – switch off lights, fans and air conditioning when not in use, keep showers short and turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world – contributing 8-10% of global emissions

Food for Thought: Keep the Ripple Going
- The Reef doesn’t stop at the shoreline - the choices you make at home can make waves too. Here’s how to continue making a difference, long after your stay:
- Compost your food scraps at home, or start a worm farm – it’s great for your gardens and reduces methane emissions from landfill
- Ditch single-use plastics – say yes to reusable containers, bottles and bags
- Switch to environmentally friendly cleaning products – every drain leads to the ocean! Look for greywater safe – and consider reusing your greywater on your garden
- Recycle right – check your local council guidelines for a refresher on what can and cannot be recycled
- Choose sustainable seafood - use apps like The GoodFish to make empowered and informed choices
- Be a voice for the Reef – share what you’ve learned, support reef conservation and inspire others to do the same
- Together, these powerful actions help build a healthier future for the Reef!
Composting food scraps instead of sending them to landfill can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50%
