Waste Reduction

Reduce, Reuse, Refuse

Everything we bring onto the island, we must also remove - which is why increasing efficiency and reducing waste at the source simply makes sense,  both economically and environmentally.

Our focus is to Reduce what we use, Reuse wherever we can, Recycle as much as possible and Refuse unnecessary items altogether.

These choices guide almost everything we do – from our building materials right down to our beverage containers. Here’s how we these values into action every day on Lady Elliot Island:

Reduce

We aim to stop waste before it starts by:

  • Choosing products made from recycled, biodegradable or low-impact materials
  • Supporting local and ethical suppliers to cut down on excess packaging and freight
  • Preferencing certified sustainable suppliers  wherever possible
  • Buying in bulk to avoid unnecessary single-use items
  • Aluminium cans are preferred over glass – they’re lighter, more compact and easier to recycle in our remote location
  • Recycling not only the “usuals,”  but also used engine oil, cooking oil, scrap metal, batteries and tyres
  • Selecting appliances and fittings with energy and water efficiency in mind
Canary squeeze butter, sourced from New Zealand, comes in 100% compostable packaging – helping us meet food safety standards and environmental best practice!

Reuse

When something breaks or wears out, we don’t throw it away – we get creative:

Spotlight: 2024 Restaurant Renovation

We gave new life to old materials across the resort:

  • Dining tables were sanded back and restored
  • Old windows and doors were given new life in other areas
  • Timber decking was repurposed
  • The old bar counter became shelving
  • Recycled Australian timber was chosen for new booth seating
  • Reclaimed hardwood was stored for future projects
  • New carpet was made from recycled and recyclable materials
  • By choosing to reuse, we reduce what needs to be flown in – and what needs to be flown out.

Refuse

  • Sometimes the most sustainable choice is to say no. For us that means:
  • No plastic water bottles – guests are encouraged to fill up at our water fountains
  • No takeaway coffee cups, plastic straws, cutlery, or other single-use plastics
  • Asking our suppliers to avoid unnecessary packaging wherever possible
  • Saying no to products that don’t align with our values
Refusing waste in the first place is one of the simplest, most powerful steps we can take to reduce our environmental footprint
